My grandmother did the same thing. nothing went to waste in those days, and most things were re-purposed. and...I recall hearing irises referred to as flags too!!! That is a most familiar childhood memory of mine, and but for you this would have been forgotten. I know of no one who calls them that now. aren't irises just the best? mine are all now blooming, and they are blue, yellow/violet, deep rust, and black. yeah, I planted the black ones a few years ago and this is the first season they're blooming madly. what a happy post, thanks for sharing Mary Ann.
