Q is for Quaking Aspen [Populus tremuloides] a deciduous tree that grows in cooler, higher elevations including my home state of Idaho. The tree shown above grows on the campus of my Alma mater, Idaho State University in Pocatello (elevation 4464 ft). Locally known as 'Quakies,' they have white bark and heart shaped leaves that 'quake' in the breeze. I think that's why I am so smitten by the many stands of white birch in Minnesota--they remind me so much of the stately and quaint Quaking Aspen.
Visit ABC Wednesday for more Q words & photos from just about everywhere.
Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it;
the tree is the real thing.
