those were the days

A couple of weeks back our town had its annual, obligatory Back to the Fifties weekend. Those of us of a certain age never seem to tire of the long lines of old cars lovingly restored, cruising around the Twin Cities for 72 hours. This blast from the past, a pristine, two-tone red & white '50's Mercury Montclair was seen in the parking lot of Perkins where we had our Saturday baconfest breakfast. Drooling over the tuck and roll upholstery, I spied this little doll, dressed in more red in the style of the era. What's not to love about red in this venue?

Here are some fetching geraniums I snapped in Hyde Park when I worked at the U of Chicago in another lifetime. Incidentally they bloomed in the same graceful neighborhood as the home of the then professor/state legislator Barack Obama.

See more reds from the past and present at Mary's meme, Ruby Tuesday.

A real patriot is the fellow who gets a parking ticket and rejoices that the system works.--Bill Vaughan

Striking reds! Red for danger, excitement, love, STOP - love the geraniums, but not so sure about Obama these days - what promise he showed! I guess he's finding what's REALLY been happening behind the scenes as with any change of government and has had to adapt accordingly . . . :-/

Fantastic reds! The car is certainly a bold statement representing the 50's! Two tone upholstery was regarded as rather flash! And love the beautiful display of geraniums!

Love the red and the car (I had a 57 chevy -- not red though). Love the quote!!!!

I love that Mercury! A 1956 I think, the beauty then is the matching upholstery in ruby and blanc...today, all cars have the usual and boring gray or mocha. Nothing two-toned. Cars are much better these days in all areax except styling (inside and out); A fine capture!

Hi Noni,

I'm impressed by you quote from Honoré de Balzac! He used to be one of my favorites while I was a student (long time ago)! That is quite some car. I remember when these cars were still around. People used to take the time to stand around them and discuss them. Now, neighbors or family relatives change cars like they change shirts. Thanks for sharing!
