L is for Louis, love and lines

I couldn't let ABC Wednesday's letter du jour go by without posting about one of my favorite Abstract Expressionist/Color Field painters, Morris Louis. He was part of the band of mid-century painters like Kenneth Noland and Barnett Newman, and many more who used this style of painting broad fields of flat color.

No. 28, 1961 @ Walker Art Center, Minneapolis

Louis lived in D.C. where he banded together a group calling themselves The Washington Color School during the 1950's & 60's. He died at age 50 from cancer attributed paint vapor exposure.
I love what he left behind.

More L words today @ ABC Wednesday. They will make you smile.

interesting artist - but how is his name spelled? The title says Lewis, but the post says Louis; the Wikipedia suggests the post is correct.
There WAS a Lewis Morris who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Good morning! Thanks for the information. Now I think I'll go to the MIA to find the painting you posted. Yes, the weather is spectacular, isn't it??

I've not heard of this artist before so thank you for the introduction:-)

Although I've never quite gotten the abstract expressionists, Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Bluebeard" does a good job of exploring their world. It's well worth reading.

Interesting paintings, Noni, - I particularly like the second with its warm colours.

I hadn't heard of this particular painter (though I do know of Barnett Newman) but am finding an appreciation for this style of painting that I previously rather simplistic. It seems it is anything but.

I love those lines.

My ABC, please come and see.

Just think what he might have achieved if he had lived past the 1960s. Guess it was dangerous to experiment with paint in those times.

You've introduced me to someone I've never heard of before! I learn a lot blogging.

Your Word Verification is POGROPHY! Doesn't that sound intriguing!

A lovely tribute to the artist for L, Noni! You also have a favorite artist of mine in your sidebar - Homer.
