Today's Flowers: from the prairie

The common name of this wildflower is Touch-me-not or Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis)

Throughout late summer and into fall, I see large stands of them at lake edge and around marshy areas where they nicely border cattails. About the size of a thumbnail and a delightful gold/orange, in a cluster they seem to float above the leaves like small yellow butterflies. Click on the photo to enlarge and you'll see their most endearing qualities: little orange freckles. What could be any prettier than a freckle-faced native flower?

Lovely Jewel Weed photo. I've been reading on some other blogs about some of the properties of this "weed." It appears it can be quite useful.

I just did a post on the very same flower! The sap inside of the stem is useful for calming the bite of stinging nettle and for helping to cure poison ivy! It grows in wet areas, and around places where nettles and the poison ivy grow. Very nice!!

I've heard of jewel weed but never seen it. Reading Pat's comment I'm thinking it must be poisonous. Very pretty little freckled flower!

These are old time favorites of mine but alas I don't have them this year. Maybe next. I hope they will look as nice as those you have photographed.

We had the tail end of Hurricane Ike here all day. I lost my cherry tree and a lot of limbs. The neighbors lost three trees and they fell on a power line and that weight broke the power pole. Not a good day here in SW Ohio.

Mine are on Canon Pixels

In many cases I prefer the wild flowers - especially with freckles on.

If you like a white weed, have a look at my site.

Hello Noni
I love flowers like these, we have some that look very similat, but ours are purple and a few are plane white with tiny frecles... I do not think the plants are the same though.
I can tell that these are good at attracting bees and such like. Beautiful picture.
